McAuliffe Elementary School History

In 1959, Christa McAuliffe was a sixth grade student in a class for exceptional students. While studying the universe, she said, "I'm reaching for the stars."

 

Christa McAuliffe Elementary School, home of the Explorers, opened in 1991. It was officially dedicated on October 27, 1991, featuring former astronaut Wally Schirra and N.A.S.A. portrait artist Robert Schaar. The school office contains the official portrait of Christa McAuliffe, first teacher in space, who tragically lost her life in the Challenger shuttle disaster on January 28, 1986.

 

In April 1998, Christa McAuliffe School was officially declared a "California Distinguished School" meeting the criteria of the California School Recognition Program. Christa McAuliffe supports the Panama-Buena Vista Union School District's mission of excellence. We strive to maintain a safe and orderly campus that is conducive to learning. Each classroom adheres to an academic program which addresses the individual needs of all students.  Students are challenged to be in charge of and accountable for their own actions as well as be academically aggressive. We strive to provide a caring environment with a strong commitment to frequent home-school communication.
